How to Build a Christmas Playlist That Works

The mistake almost everyone makes is treating a Christmas playlist as a collection of good songs. It isn't — it's a piece of scheduling. The same twenty tracks that make a party work will sink a dinner, and a dinner playlist at a party will empty the room by nine.

Match the energy to the moment, not to your taste

Whatever you personally like least is probably load-bearing. The crooners are what make a dinner playlist recede into the background, and the songs everyone finds slightly annoying are exactly the ones a room sings along to. Build for the occasion; play your favourites in the car.

Recognition beats novelty

A Christmas playlist is not the place to introduce anyone to anything. The pleasure is recognition — the first three notes landing before the brain catches up. Keep unfamiliar tracks to roughly one in five, and never in the first four.

Make it longer than the event
