Christmas Eve Box Ideas
Four things, opened together. That's the whole tradition.
The Christmas Eve box is a recent tradition — it spread through the 2010s, largely via social media — and it has already developed a failure mode. Boxes get bigger every year until they are indistinguishable from Christmas morning, at which point the actual morning lands flat.
The version that works is small and fixed: something to wear, something to watch or read, something to eat or drink, and one small thing to do. Four items. The purpose is to mark the evening, not to compete with the next day.
The Four-Item Formula
- Pyjamas. The one item nobody regrets. Everyone is wearing them in the photos.
- Something to watch or read. A film for the evening, or a book for the bedtime that follows.
- Something to eat or drink. Hot chocolate and a treat that would not normally appear at that hour.
- One small activity. A colouring page, a card game, or a reindeer-food kit — something with an end.
You can add a fifth item. You should not add a sixth. The constraint is what stops this becoming a second present-opening, and it is the difference between a tradition you keep and one that quietly gets dropped after three years because it became too much work.
What to Put In, by Age
Toddlers (1–3)
- ✓ A board book about Christmas — something short enough to finish
- ✓ Chunky pyjamas, one size up so they last the season
- ✓ A single soft toy rather than several small ones
- ✓ Bath crayons or a bath toy, since the bath is part of the evening
Skip: Anything with small parts, and anything noisy — the point of the evening is winding down.
Young children (4–8)
- ✓ Matching pyjamas, the single most-used item in any box
- ✓ A Christmas film to watch that evening
- ✓ Hot chocolate sachets and marshmallows
- ✓ A colouring page and pencils
- ✓ A reindeer-food or cookies-for-Santa kit
Skip: Toys that need building. Nobody has the patience for flat-pack on Christmas Eve.
Older children (9–12)
- ✓ Pyjamas or a hoodie they picked themselves
- ✓ A card game or puzzle the whole family can play
- ✓ Snacks they would not normally be allowed at that hour
- ✓ A book, ideally one in a series they are already reading
Skip: Anything that competes with tomorrow. This is the warm-up act, not the main event.
Teenagers and adults
- ✓ Good socks — genuinely, this is the age they become welcome
- ✓ A face mask, bath oil, or something else for a slow evening
- ✓ A proper hot drink: real chocolate, a good tea, or a miniature
- ✓ A film or an album, and permission to do nothing else
Skip: Gadgets and anything expensive. Save the budget for the day itself.
Free Things That Fill a Box Well
Half the box can cost nothing without anyone noticing. Our free printables include three that were made for exactly this: a letter to Santa with guided prompts, a colouring page, and a Christmas bucket list for the family to work through in the days after. All three print at home in a minute.
What It Should Cost
$15 to $30 per box, most of it the pyjamas. If a box is costing more than that, check whether you have started buying Christmas Day presents and putting them in a box a day early — which is the most common way this tradition gets expensive without getting better.
If you are tracking the season's spending, the gift budget calculator has room for a line per person, and Christmas Eve boxes are exactly the kind of cost that escapes a budget because it does not feel like a present.
When to Open It
Early evening on Christmas Eve — December 24, 2026 this year — usually after dinner and before the film. Opening it in the morning stretches the anticipation past what most children can hold, and opening it at bedtime wastes the two items designed for the evening itself.
Boxes, and What to Use Instead
A wooden crate looks best and stores flat for next year. A personalised box is the version most often photographed and the most often outgrown — a name is charming at four and less so at fourteen. Pillowcases, tote bags, and a second stocking all work, and cost nothing. The container is the least important decision here; the fixed time and the fixed number of items are what make it a tradition.
