Why a Christmas Budget Falls Apart

Almost nobody overspends at Christmas in one dramatic moment. It happens in twenty small ones โ€” an extra twenty dollars here because the better version was right there, a gift for someone you forgot, a "while I'm at it" purchase in the checkout queue. Each decision is defensible on its own. The total is what surprises people in January.

A budget fixes this only if you set it per person and before you start browsing. A single total for the whole season is too abstract to push back against a specific item in front of you. Forty dollars for your brother is a number you can hold a product up against.

Start even, then move money deliberately

Use the split-evenly button to get a baseline, then reallocate. Most lists have two or three people where the gift genuinely matters and several where the point is the gesture. Moving fifty dollars from the second group to the first costs nothing and improves the outcome noticeably.

Track spent separately from planned

The two columns exist because they diverge. Planned is what you decided in October; spent is what actually happened. Watching the gap in real time is what stops the third overspend, and the difference between the two columns is the most useful number on this page.

Leave a buffer you expect to use

Hold back roughly ten percent of the total unallocated. Someone will be added to the list โ€” a new partner, a teacher, a neighbour who drops something round. A buffer means that person doesn't push everything else over.

What Counts as a Christmas Budget

This calculator covers gifts. Total holiday spending usually runs considerably higher once food, travel, decorations, and cards are counted โ€” often close to double the gift figure. If you're planning the whole season, the Christmas planner covers the timeline and the printable budget sheet gives you space for the other categories.

Once the numbers are set, our gift guides are organised by budget band โ€” under $25 and under $50 are the two most people live in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on Christmas gifts?
A common guideline is 1 to 1.5 percent of annual take-home pay across all holiday spending, gifts included. The more useful test is simpler: pick a number you could lose without noticing in January. If the figure makes you uneasy in October, it will make you miserable in February.
How do I split a Christmas budget between people?
Start even, then adjust. Divide the total by the number of people, then move money toward the two or three gifts that genuinely matter and away from the obligation gifts. An even split is a starting point, not an answer.
What is a reasonable Secret Santa or coworker budget?
Twenty to thirty dollars covers most office exchanges. For coworkers outside a formal exchange, ten to fifteen is plenty โ€” a thoughtful small gift reads better than an expensive one that makes the recipient feel they owe you.
Does this calculator save my numbers?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us or stored. Refreshing the page clears it, so print the page or copy the figures onto our free budget planner printable if you want to keep them.
